Playing Pretend

How has playing pretend changed over the years

Playing pretend used to be fun.

An escape as childlike

As running to the park after school.

It was all just a game.

But, red rover

Red rover

Send older eyes right over.

What was once a game

Turned into a tool of survival and betrayal.

You can pretend you're healthy

Since your family pretends

Mental sicknesses don't exist.

You can pretend you're a fellow ass

Since your peers pretend

Rainbow people or darker people are threats.

You can pretend you believe

Since the household pretends

Your silence towards a religion

Always means "yes" since "no" is muted.

You can you pretend you're obedient

Because the second chance of perfection

Pretends he's a saint

By pushing you over the edge

Just to further prove his position.

You pretend you have nothing to say

Because those you're supposed to turn to

Pretend that they're there for you

As they're pretend you're normal

And thus have no excuses.

Playing pretend used to be fun

Until you fall apart while pretending to stable

And others watch on

While pretending they see nothing.
