Pinch Me

Political Poem

Breath stands still in preparation for the puncture,

as I anticipate the prolonged pinch.

Superhero bandaids bring strength and comfort

to a soft boy who shies from needles.

The whole routine can be quick or slow,

depending on the day.

It had never occurred to me

I could have a future like this.

I kill the germs twice, just in case;

it’s better to be safe than sick.

Pinching skin proves that I’m real

and this isn’t a dream.

And then it stabs my skin

and I push

liquid liberation

into my bloodstream.
