Peeling Sanity

This poem is about overcoming obstacles and mental illness. It is also about growing as a person.

Sanity peels from the walls like old yellow wallpaper.

It gets stuck under our fingernails,

And distorts our fingerprints.

This old house is ugly to others,

Only I can see it's inner beauty.

Things that once were, are no longer.

I swim uphill against the current.

My long hair tangled on my back.

Childhood memories drift by in the water,

Like the petals off a cherry blossom tree.

Life is delicate.

Cherish each moment.

Overcome insanity as best as you can.

Adapt to changing temperatures around you.

Find that voice within.

Travel through the seasons with your head held high.

Wear appropriate footwear for the battle ahead.

Keep your eyes fixed on your goals.

Don't forget where you have been,

Or where you are going.

Peel the sanity from the walls.
