Pebbles, Petals, Soup, Stars
A poem for my mom
Your love is multifaceted—
it is like pebbles on the ground
that help me find my way home
It is like flower petals in the sky
that give me color and magic in autumn
It is like chicken soup and fresh-baked bread
that offer me comfort and warmth in winter
It is like the ocean and the night sky
that are unchanging and unconditionally kind
It is like the sun and the rain of spring
that take turns to help all living things grow
It is like the homemade salsa of the summer
the preciousness of your fine dicing of each vegetable and herb
Thank you for a love that has been and is a strength—
a cultivation of legs so I may stand
a steadfast nurturing of wings so I may fly
a true education on what it means to love
and to create a home wherever I am
Because wherever I am, you are
and I know how very deeply I am loved
