Our Downfall

an observance of division

Hidden in the words spoken aloud for all to hear

Are the messages of the few that go undetected

By the majority and unheeded by the restless.

Warnings of peril and pain

Are ignored and tossed aside

As useless or unimportant.

Another generation without a care,

Our heads in the clouds while

Hearts stop beating around us.

The tales of prophets of old

Flash through our minds as we press on,

Never ceasing nor slowing our endless march.

Stories of new horrors reach our ears

And give us strength in our anger

As our righteous crusades continue.

The darkness that surrounds our lives

Seeps into our hearts and minds,

And we fight against ourselves time and time again.

Despairing thoughts caress our souls,

Showing us what we have yet to achieve

And leaving us in a state of hopeless division.

We misunderstand the truth and each other

In favor of keeping our selfish ideals

And clinging to the singularity of our visions.

The divorce of the mind and body follow,

Prevail against a union of thought,

Causing a rift in society too large to fix.

We have watched our rising and our triumph,

Watched weakness rooted out to ensure a domination

That will be our downfall.

There is no one left to compromise,

Individuals seek control and transcendence

For them and their own.

Civilization and the dignity of our humanity

Crumble around us in the wake

Of destructive and unrelenting judgments.

Perception and reason abandon us,

Watching from afar as we destroy life

Without realizing our predicament.

We have strayed too far from the truth

To recover the peace that we seek

In this, our doomed and wretched society.
