Our rhythm altered
A new beat
Set to a melody
We had hummed
For long-
A tune we knew
By heart and ear,
Picked up one day
Without knowing
A steady
Step by step dance
That we choreographed
Without thought
Without discussion,
A motion we fell into
As easily as breathing,
Hand in hand
A tango through life-
Until one day
The beats of
Booted feet changed,
Took a new step
Created a new lead
Worth learning-
A foreign dance
With accelerated footwork,
Professional notes
Studied and performed
To create a basic structure
For the next beats,
The next dancers
To join our show
Once current movements
And today’s melody
Become as well known
And well practiced
As yesterday’s
Hot tune-
Once today’s song
Becomes yesterday’s memory,
Elevator music on our way
To our next destination
And we reminisce about the times
We could barely remember
To keep our dance alive.
