You didn’t know this
But I had other things to do today
Things that hadn’t included
Holding your hand as you drew your last breath
I was going to feed you chicken soup
And sing “Your Cheatin’ Heart”
While you ate your lunch
Turned out the cheat of the heart
Would be when yours failed
To continue on to the next beat
How could you know
I had other things to do today
When your plan was breakfast
And a fishing trip with your friends?
It never mattered to me
That your plans were all in your head
We carried on with them anyway
Day after day, living your life
From the pictures in your head
And my own imagination
We went everywhere you wanted to go
Together
But not today
I didn’t know this
But you had things to do today
Things that didn’t include me
Except for having a hand to hold
Until you took the first step
Into your new journey

I promise her. I'd do anything for her. She's my mom. Even as Lanie and Deanna are flying home, Mom is scrappy fighting dying. She lays too still in that too-big bed with all the toasty white hospital blankets, in the south tower, at the broad end of a long slow-turning corner that delivers me again to her private room with the view she can't see through, with the beeping that tells us nothing new, and all these ice chips she can't swallow, and a flood of well-intentioned nurses who cannot do a damned thing all the same.
