My Dearest Little One

by Erin N Hand 4 months ago in childrens poetry

You are a part of this world too.

I’ll admit sometimes I don’t want kids.

Not because I don’t like children. I love kids. And I would love to have a family. But I feel like it is irresponsible of me to have kids. That I am bringing someone into this world that is going to have to deal with the consequences of my decisions even when I’m no longer here.

And in a way, kids terrify me.

If I have kids how can I ever have peace in life? Children prove the existence of a future, that the universe will continue to exist long after I am gone. With children, we can no longer shut our eyes and pretend these consequences are meaningless. What we do now, like time, will stretch out far beyond our reach. And that’s a little terrifying.

So here is something I would want my child to hear. Something they can hold onto even when I’m not around.

_______

My dearest little one…

You were once so small, too small for the world. And so you stayed hidden inside me while you grew. Once you were big enough you came out to see the world, and the world was there to see you.

And so my little one…

You met the sky, vast and endless, and the ground, sturdy and strong. But there is more to this world than sky and ground.

And so, my little one…

You saw the sun, big and bright, he sat high in the sky for a while. But then it was time for him to go, and he walked across the sky,

And so, my little one…

You met the moon, smiling and sliver, and the stars, little lights dancing around the dark sky. And when the stars were tired of dancing and the moon was tired of smiling, the sun came back to give them a break. But there is more to this world than sky and ground, and sun, and moon and stars

And so, my little one…

I brought you to the beach to touch the ocean, blue and moving. On his surface were waves that met and parted, and met again. Up against the sandy shore, the water reaches out, towards your little toes. But there is more to this world than sky and ground, and sun and moon, and stars and oceans.

And so my little one…

We climbed up and up to a mountaintop, rocky and hard. Here the water was solid and white, it was soft but far too cold.

And so, my little one…

I carried you to the desert, warm and sunny. The rocks here came in many sizes, some were huge, but most were tiny grains called sand. But there is more to this world than sky and ground, and sun and moon, and stars and oceans, and mountains and deserts.

And so, my little one…

I brought you to the forest, tall and green. the trees did not have hair like you, rather green leaves that attached to thin branches. These thin branches come together in a thick, brown trunk. And so you met life and learned that you are alive as well. But there is more to this world than sky and ground, and sun and moon, and stars and ocean, and mountains and deserts, and forest and life.

And so, my little one…

We continued on our journey to a field where we saw a tiger and a wolf chasing each other in the grass. They came to greet you and welcome you to their world.

Then others began to arrive: lizards and lions, armadillos and antelope, dear and dingos, snakes and snails, eagles and elephants, beetles and butterflies. These are some of the animals of the world, and like you, they love to play. And like you and me, they cannot play forever. One day they will stop their chase, but that will not be till they are old and tired.

So do not worry my little one. Because there is more to this world than sky and ground, and sun and moon, and stars and oceans, and mountains and deserts, and forest and life, and animals and play.

And so, my little one…

I led you to my home, a village, full and happy. Here there are people, similar to you. But each one is unique, like each animal and each star. Some will be your friend, and some will not. However, you all share this world and you are all connected, never alone.

But there is more to this world than sky and ground, and sun and moon, and stars and oceans, and mountains and deserts, and forest and life, and animals and play, and people and happiness.

And so, my little one…

We carried you to a pool and in its reflection, you saw you. And everything standing beside you. There is more to this world than sky and ground, and sun and moon, and stars and ocean, and mountains and deserts, and forest and life, and animals and play, and people and happiness.

There is more to this world because there is you.

And so. My dearest little one...

You are a part of this world too.
