Moonlight

Poetry

Silver lights dance in the dark

With a gentle glow that doesn’t burn

Nor make us stumble in pitch black.

The Moon comes to light up the way;

So why do we turn our backs when she shows?

Perhaps it’s the fear of all the unknown

That is lurking in the dark’s deep void.

The monsters and secrets that we all hide

Suddenly reveal themselves in the night.

We tell her all our good stories,

And we tell her all our lies.

The Moon’s an endless cavern

Who helps us sleep at night.

She listens to all our tales

Of times where we misled.

She hears every single deception

And every doubt in your head.

When you toss and turn in your bed

And have to say what you think out loud,

She listens to all of your prayers

But it’s too late for her to answer aloud,

For we always go to sleep

Right when the Moon comes out.

She cries in the quiet of night,

Filling the sky with her starry tears.

We try to hide them as best we can

By covering them up with smog and planes.

Why do we intentionally disappoint her?

She only wants us to hear what she’ll say.

She calls out for someone to love her,

And instead we turn her away

And we worship the bright beaming sun

Who packs all our secrets away.
