milieu
a poem on comfort
there's a feeling
that cannot be captured
by a place
or a person
or an individual thing
but rather
by the context
and the way
in which they exist
it's in warm beds on workdays
and iced teas in summer
it’s in candles on dark nights
and for the broken it’s in kind words from another
it's in hot showers when skies cry
and campfires when they don’t
it's in knowing coins help feed the homeless
and hope when they won’t
it's in fur coats in winter
and in pets when they're loved ones
it’s in favourite sweaters
and when the fragrance is right - in freshly baked scones
it's in homes but not houses
and lovers not spouses
it's in music that enlightens elates and arouses
but only with context can that feeling exist
without such a thing
it could never persist
milieu draws the boundary
like the blade of a knife
that births such things
as blessings or strife
so it holds its breath
until the moment is right
to embrace the small things
and breathe comfort to life
