Its the little things,
Like hearing birds sing,
Or smell of spring.
Like a summer breeze,
The swaying dance of the trees,
Or the buzzing of the bees.
Like the colors of autumn,
The sound of the fire place sparking,
Or the marshmellows in your hot chocolate.
Like the coming of winter,
Like all of the holiday splendor,
Or the joy of moments to be remembered.
It’s the little things, the microcosm, that makes the big things, the macrocosm, digestible.
At times, life can be overwhelming. However, if we remember to appreciate the little things, they often are the silver lining to most of our dark clouds or the light at the end of the tunnel.
Of course, this is much easier said than done. With practice, I attest, that this is a way of thinking that will help your mental health. Life happens, and it always seems to “pile it on”, hitting you with everything at once.
In these moments of desperation, I challenge you to think of the little things. The small victories you’ve accomplished, the progress you’ve made, that sip of coffee, that puff of nicotine, that smile from that stranger, the hug of your child, or—the one that I think is overlooked the most—the fact that you woke up today. And if today isn’t going the way you want, when you wake up tomorrow, be grateful for another day; and remember—it’s the little things.
