Mental ICU After Mental CPR
Don't you dare give up now
Unaware of last warning signs informing,
'No longer intent on dying, only exhausted by the need to breathe.'
Toxic thoughts though dangerous have an antidote;
some reversal elixir given in even less than ideal circumstances can work,
give just enough window to stabilize.
But futility…
is a sunken-eyed suffocating half-being slouched against the back corner wall
offering neither protest nor praise.
When life hangs in the balance,
rescue efforts help most if you do too.
Even one-eighth ounce of meager fight retains precious riot
imperceptibly moving
from cliff edges that close to oblivion.
Striking out at saviors and phantom pain
with opaque recognition—even of oneself.
Swiping at distortions.
Surrounded by detritus.
Still alive.
Blink once for yes.
Excessive questions foster recoil.
Blink as long as you can hear me,
can remember who you are,
if it’s okay to hold your hand,
hold your heart,
beat blood and spirit circulation to vital organs ‘til stable.
I promise recovery comes in time
but this love is a universal constant.
The companion allowing everything you need to be
until whole
and you again.
