Mail room lament

submission for the villanelle challenge

Florescent light with softly buzzing sound

The smell of coffee that's burnt and bitter

Are you happy in this life that you've found?

The papers and problems always surround

You would leave, but what waits for a quitter

You hear is worse than what you wrestle now

You were often told you would make them proud

Your future was so bright that it glittered

Adult life's not so bright as it turns out

You lived freely before but nearly drowned

The food was scarce and the lights oft flickered

In that starving artist's decrepit house

You have security, no more unsound

You dream of freedom, but do you miss it?

You wonder as the shift clock comes unwound

You mourn for what your hunger, fear, allowed

A dream you dreamt to grow ever dimmer

Florescent light with softly buzzing sound

Florescent light with softly buzzing sound

Villanelle
