Low Hanging Fruit

by Samantha Ayers 2 months ago in surreal poetry
Report Story

A poem of self discovery

I made it so easy for you, I was right there

Dangling in front of your face, all yours

Shiny and ripe and ready to be plucked down and consumed

Low hanging fruit

Easy pickins’

But you didn’t want what was right in front of your face

You wanted one of the fruit at the top of the tree

One of the fruit that was harder to get

You liked a challenge and I was just too easy for you

I always wished to be one of the fruit at the top of the tree after you left

Closer to the sun and hard to get

A chase

But then one day the wind blew hard and knocked me to the ground

Where I was left rotting into the earth

And when my flesh was consumed and the ground had taken me into its embrace

And there was nothing left but seeds

It was then that I realized

I was never meant to be the fruit

I was never supposed to be picked and consumed by anyone

I was to be a whole damn tree
