It’s been ten weeks so far
This lockdown feels forever
Allowed out to walk
I sadly pass the closed shops
And worse still is the sight of
Locked up pubs, restaurants and bars
All that former energy and excitement
People eating, drinking and talking
Bands playing, dancers swaying
I even miss the late night shouting and fisticuffs
When will life return to these streets?
Some say this virus will be with us forever
That we will have to adapt to a ‘new normal’
New ways to meet and greet and leave
It makes me shudder inside
But whatever happens
I know that people will once more return
To these now empty streets
To the shops, the cafe’s and movie houses
Until then it’s back home
Home where they say the heart is
And yes it is but I know a part of mine
Is out in the streets, the city at night
And that it’s waiting for me there
There in the pub with a pint of best bitter
And a steak pie!
