It Will Grow with You

on writing your first series

It starts in your belly,

an inkling after viewing

your favorite movie

and then a few more

or feeling empty after reading

a story

that will never quite leave you.

Then, you realize

you wanted something slightly

different by the end,

so you decide to write your own.

And it will grow

with you.

In elementary school,

your main

character will be named

after your cat,

the first child you ever had.

In middle school,

the setting will change —

Oregon, Seattle, Anchorage.

In high school,

you will realize

the story is more expansive

than you ever imagined,

so you will create

an entire universe

for the characters

who have become more

than fiction —

an integral part of your

being.

When you fall in love

with someone

who doesn’t share the sentiment,

you will develop a hero

in their likeness

and fantasize about a life

that is somehow also real —

two parts of yourself divided,

but you won’t tell

your fair weather friends about it

because you know they wouldn’t

understand.

In college,

you will consume literature

about end of the world

and it will seep into your

writing —

a missing piece

to complete the aimless plotting.

And it will continue to grow

with you.

When you don’t know

how to move on with reality,

or when you’re lonely,

your story

will become your best friend.

When you try publishing

for the first time,

bold and naïve

to the shortcomings

of the industry

it will become the source

of long-lasting disappointment

because you realized

the world doesn’t love it

as much as you.

In adulthood,

after sorting out

what your life is really about

and understanding that writing

will always be your passion,

that you don’t need

external approval of your series

to be happy with it,

you will begin revising

the final draft,

a fully concocted version

of the story

that will always

be with you.
