It's What You Do
A sonnet for teachers
There is no greater calling than to teach.
To shape the future world to a degree.
To serve those children who seem out of reach,
And help discover who they're meant to be.
🖍
You warmly greet those in your care each day,
With hand shakes, fist bumps, or high fives for all.
You first assess them as they come your way.
Now, who may need a hug? Who's going to bawl?
✏️
Your students will not care just what you know,
Until they know you truly care for them.
They carry their own troubles as they grow,
Internal scars you do not dare condemn.
✂️
And once you have them spellbound, then it's time
To fill their minds with knowledge they will need,
And show them a new learning paradigm,
By starting with a tiny planted seed.
🥰
You seek that ever-critical breakthrough,
Because you choose to teach, it's what you do.
