It gets better
big hit at poetry night
The definition of failure is lack of success or the omission of expected or required action
We as people feel like we have failed at some point in life
Whether it's with a test or an essay
Maybe even a marriage or as a parent
But have we really failed just because of what we’ve done doesn’t match the textbook expectations
Does that make us inferior to the standard that was printed in the dictionary
To the articles that show the good in those who receive but not the ones that work for it
We value ourselves on the words of others even when we deny it
We worry what their wondering eyes see when they judge us intently
Making us squeamish within our skins
Hoping that they say something
Something kind and not completely ego shattering
The wait for their words make your stomach ache
Waiting for them to say something only to never speak to you
To stare at you every chance they may have only to continue on with no communication
That wordless space that you can’t find a way to break without looking desperate
Desperate for the deep yearning for their words
The yearning for their approval
Only to notice that you've wasted so much time on your mild obsession over their lack of words
What about your words
What about those words that swell in your throat only to get swallowed back done by the fear of being corrected, ignored or shushed
Words that just sit on your tongue making your mouth feel uneven on the inside
making your anxiety feel so bad that you become ill
ill with an undertone of self-reflection having you notice that their words won’t change who you are as a person when you by definition “failed”
...
Because in all honesty fuck failing

I am a published poet four times over in Topeka Kansas. I rarely write happy sounding poems or stories. Most of what I write is personal in a way, or somewhat controversial. Nothing I write is meant to offend anyone. Please read and enjoy!
