I Wish I Wasn’t Always Scraping By

Still out here trying to reach for my slice of pie.

We can’t afford it.

What if we could afford it?

What if we could have afforded the Girl Scouts and dance classes?

The braces and clothes?

What if we weren’t always needing to be scavengers waiting for the blue light specials?

What if we could pay all of our bills? What if we could live without debt?

What if the holidays weren’t stressful? Robbing Peter to pay Paul is my identity.

What if there was enough for everyone? What if our work could help us to afford a life we don’t have to live second hand?

What if we didn’t have to worry about food, knowing there would always be enough?

What if we could always fill up our car with gas and not worry about it breaking down?

What if Christmas wasn’t stressful?

What if we could afford to travel?

What if we didn’t sweat at the check out waiting for the groceries to overdraw the bank balance?

What if we could feel free, financially free?

What if money wasn’t an obstacle to living our dreams?

What would it feel like to not feel shame about being poor?

What would it feel like to go shopping without such a tight budget?

I crave financial freedom.

I scream out to the masses, “wait over here! We are down here, waving up, can you see us?”

We are being buried alive with our dreams still intact.

We care about this life, too, but it costs too much to get ahead. I got left behind.

I couldn’t afford to live anymore.
