I'm Thankful for Peanutbutter and Other Stuff
A free-verse poem
Cold damp mornings in a farmer's field
The way a raven's wings catches the light so that they look blue
That wonderful smell preceding a hot meal
The ability to make someone smile if you so choose
All these things I am thankful for
Really, there is not much need for more
Creation is beautiful
And I am in it.
Tomorrow, I may be poor
Or hungry, or cold, or tired, or sore.
But then there will still be a heart beating at my core.
And I will choose to be thankful even more.
Family, friends, and the roof over my head
It floors me that I am allowed to say I am thankful for all these
When I lay down in bed
But also I am thankful for...
peanut butter
rain on the roof
the way cream swirls in billowing clouds
descending like a storm into a hot drink
The poised energy before a thunderstorm
finding road apples when you are on a long walk
The way good music can pull at your insides
The heaviness of night
The lightness of morning
The way the cold bites
The magic of a world created by black lines on a page
How gravity allows your feet to enjoy the feel of a soft carpet
And to not float away from home
To a place far away
That might not have peanut butter,
or family,
or rain.
