I am of the ocean
a poem
I am of the ocean
But my heart belongs to the trees
The wild birches and oak forests
With leaves and moss so green
Dirt trails made in secret
The whispering wind through the leaves
I am of the ocean
But these things call to me
The ocean is wild and turbulent and with a soul so deep
Many hidden secrets flow through her ancient streets
Her currents ever changing, her tide timeless as the night
A give and take of life and death
Steadfast friend, endless might
I used to think the two were different
And I’d be torn in two
A siren with a tail of scales
Who longed to walk through rooted trails
Beneath a canopy of emerald leaves
Not the azure blue she’s always known
But have you ever climbed a mountain and seen the waves amongst the peaks?
Beautiful waves of amber and emerald rising and falling
Casting off color in the setting heat
So perhaps they're not so different
And am exactly where I need to be
All it takes is a shift of perspective
To learn to see the forest through the trees
I am a girl of the ocean
Who loves the forest and the mischief that both bring
For both have hidden treasures
And depths others fail to see
More than waves or changing colors
Both have mystery and wonder
Offer shelter and hope and life
I am they and they are me
A siren with a forest heart of green
