Hummingbirds

A Poem

Hummingbirds

I can still smell the wet pavement

Drying in the sun

Trees looking down at us

As we spun so hard we fell

To see the world turn above us

Dreaming of what we could do

Of what we could be

The air was full of sweetness

The kind of sweet only summer has

The soil the wood it all smelled like possibilities

Like freedom

And we didn’t care if our hands or our feet got dirty

Or if we scraped our knees

We just wanted to feel the warm air blow past us as we rode down the stairs

Laughing with hearts that beat so fast we felt like hummingbirds
