I.
Our attention was squandered
Spent like loose change
Collected at bottom of purses-
Forgotten in pockets like lint.
We claimed it precious
Too valuable to share-
And yet we wasted it
Behind desks and blue screens
For pennies to rub
And quarters to drop
In wishing wells
Wasted on wishes for objects,
Inanimate love that we place
Above souls of peers.
II.
Our faces are thin
Sallow looking out window
To worlds we've forgotten
In exchange for weekends
Where we make mad dash
From one chore to next,
Never quite checking in
To the rooms upstairs-
Where spiders crawl
And cobwebs cover faces
Of individuals we once saw
In mirrors and fields,
As though they're a different life.
III.
We state the obvious
The belief in responsibility-
But obviously
We were not meant
To lose selves
And devote to conformity.
