House on Fire
A movement piece challenging the intrigue and neglect surrounding black women in America.
Your House Is On Fire
Black woman.
What does it take for her to be a
goddess in your eyes?
Is it when she has an empire?
When she serves as your spiritual guru?
Or is it when her body and skin intrigue you?
As long as she makes YOU feel good and confident about yourself,
you praise her. Worship her. Even say you love her.
Black woman.
So if she doesn’t meet your godlike standards, then what?
You choose not to see her at all.
Why is she invisible to your eyes?
Why are you deaf to her story?
Why is she easy to use, objectify or ignore?
Does caring about the black woman
take something away from You?
If these questions make heat rise within,
tend that fire as if your house were burning down.
Black woman.
She is not Your goddess.
She is not Your underclass.
She is not Your muse for self-fulfillment or erotic experimentation.
She is whole flesh, blood and tears
That are 100% as valuable as your own.
A movement piece challenging the intrigue & neglect surrounding black women in America.
