Jetting back from a business trip

Flying north up the Atlantic coast,

the lights of once-familiar cities blur --

as do my thoughts, high but indistinct,

unvoiced while I have been away from you.

It seems I see most clearly through your eyes;

we'll talk, and everything I've done seems real.

We'll touch, and once again my heart makes sense;

I'm only half awake away from you.

Still, we two can be a sea apart,

even when we're sharing the same room.

I know that you will scan my face to see

if what you need appears there in my gaze.

Rest easy, love. Although my soul is strange,

it's true to yours: composite, supple strength

is ours, like the alloy wings that shear the sky

and bear me, steadily, home at last to you.
