color me surprised that he left her behind

the moment she got too close to his secrets—

when, really, his biggest secret was himself

because he never even knew what he wanted

or even what he hoped to avoid in women.

it’s not as if it was a bad forecast to start

since she was his type, from her hair

down to the pink pedicure on her toes,

but he never believed in soulmates

or even, if we’re honest, monogamy.

from the moment I saw them together,

I knew she was a wound waiting to open,

and no amount of band-aids or stitches

could get them healing back together,

like they were toxins to each other.

if you think I’m judging too unfairly,

just know that I’m the one he left first,

way before he met his latest regret,

and it was only a matter of time

before someone’s heart was broken.
