Ancient Cedar in Eden Grove, Vancouver Island, BC
The soft loam cradles my foot
with each muffled step
heel-midfoot-toe
an imperceptible visitor
to Grandmother Cedar.
She- adorned in ribbons, offerings, treasures.
The soil smoothed out
where grateful sit bones have rested at her roots.
She- overlooks the river
her taproot well quenched
even in midsummer.
They may come for her someday, too
-the ones whose lineage lost touch
generations ago.
For now, we breathe thanks
and hold ceremony at her ancient feet.
Drawn together by her boughs
and collective awe.
