Going The Distance
A poem about moving away from family.
Baby of the sea,
Born and raised
In a foreign world,
That wasn’t meant to be.
Cause this baby of the sea
Can’t handle the pressure
Of the creatures beneath.
Not few enough,
Not far enough in between.
Suffocating on the water,
Entangled in seaweed,
This baby fish has to grow feet
To feel free.
The sea creatures,
That they call family,
Feel betrayed
By their actions,
By the baby of the sea.
Their gills have been shrinking
For far too long,
They can no longer breathe underwater.
They’re not like their mother.
They dream of the mountains and trees,
The birds and the bees,
What’s best for their own family.
And they have to escape the murky waters
To find peace.
It’s not personal, so please
Don’t let distance
Cut the leash.
