Generations

A family poem

Long ago when they were young,

when life was simple love was strong

our lives were formed and yet we never knew.

When our ancestors came together,

They made their mark on us forever.

With their love our generations grew.

*

Their time had come and some have gone.

Now we are left to carry on,

their legacy, their lives, our family.

With their blood flowing through our veins,

it’s our turn now to hold the reigns,

and be the coming generations’ history.

*

Love your fathers, hug your mothers.

Your sons and daughters; sisters, brothers.

They’re your past, your future, your today.

Each generation grows together.

Remember we’re not here forever,

Take the time to live and laugh and play.

*

As we watch the generations fade away,

There’s a whole new generation on the way.

That sense of becoming the 'senior' generation as parents pass away was something few people write or talk about, and I know I was definitely not prepared for it. That sudden weight was a surprise that still haunts decades later! Beautiful work here Cathy!

Wow, this was powerful. A great reminder that the best way to honor our ancestors is to live life fully while we’re here.

SO Beautiful, Cathy! I lost my 95-year-old grandmother a year ago today, so this hit just at the right time. Gave me a healing stream of tears this morning. Such a beautiful reminder. Thank you for this!

lovely and sentimental in the best way <3

  • Lovely, honoring those who've gone before, embracing with love those who are, believing in those who are yet to come.
