Fickle Hearts

Moon Chasers

We were fickle creatures

Chasing the swaying of the moon

And the beams of stars

Down rutted roads

And across growing fields,

More wild than

The howls that filled the air

And the warning clicks

Of passing predators,

We searched for consistency

When we were unstable,

Manifesting only

What we understood.

We sat upon mountain top

Hugging knees to thumping chest

Watching the moon’s phase shift

In the blink of an eye,

Our definition of beauty

The same as

Our definition of change.
