Existential musings on destiny and relationships

The world is closing around me,

Circling at fall of day,

And with every passing moment

I wish another way.

The ways in life's dark passages,

Inscribed before world's birth:

The story spanning our ages;

Spent wandering this earth.

Wherefore be or fade we at End?

The Fates' strings draw tighter

Against desperate, fleeting escape—

Failing heart no lighter.

And now speaks Destiny to me,

Commands my heavy pace,

Moves my dumb tongue to its motions,

My eyes meet not your face.

Accusations, revelations.

The moment faith shatters.

Searing cleft inflicts the divorce,

Lost is all that matters.

The shards are falling around us—

Between lies but regret.

The chasm stretches wide but I—

I must long for you yet.

Heaven's decree unflinchingly

Has me speak thus to thee,

While I, before the kiss of sleep,

Defy eternity.

Have you experienced a breakdown in a star-crossed relationship where you both seem fated never to piece things back together, but you still hope despite hope? Let me know how this poem spoke to you @lilijanewriter
