Earthenware
Her rich blond hair dripped onto her work
Frustrated, picked, and pulled
She looked out her dorm window, chilled by
A Chicago end of summer's night , lined
By dark quiet clouds clapping chorused with a constant tapping
Naturally, she glances back but her attention is extracted by
The striped cup.
Fired by earthenware ceramic
Coffee-stained tan
School-house red
Garden-filled-of-dandelion yellow
Clear-quarry blue
Purposely-lost-in-forest green
The colours of where she used to live.
Giving herself a break, she picks up her guitar
Thumbing and scratching through songs she taught herself
Strained by an unknown sickness, her voice quivers
At the words her parents used to sing
Together they used to play, now numb to touch
Her sight is filtered to only see
The striped cup.
Fired by earthenware ceramic
Coffee-stained tan
Roaring-Rambler red
Golden-worn-cross yellow
Midnight-stroll-on-the-Michigan blue
Studying-on-new-grass green
The colours of where she lives now
She climbed into her cradle of blankets
Wondering what happened to the clapping and tapping
She presses her head against her bear,
Faint smell of everlasting cardamom and Arabic spices.
As the last drop of caffeine slowly evaporates
She wishes she were back but,
Her water cooled, star dancing eyes
saw once more
The striped cup.
Fired by earthenware ceramic
Coffee-stained tan
Mom's-windbreaker red
Her-brother's-toy-helicopter yellow
A-bestfriend's-frayed-sweater blue
Her-dad's-favourite-shirt green
Colours of Home.
