Drug of Choice

When less is more, or more is more

“I smoke so I can feel more”

She says

“I feel everything more deeply

More vividly

Horny hungry sad happy

Everything is more

Plus I’m more creative”

She chuckles nervously

The same two-note pot laugh

Huh-heh

She used to punctuate sentences

To cover when she has nothing left to say

“I drink to be numb”

He says

“To forget

To not be me for a while

To relax so I can sleep

To slow down

And not hate the world for a while”

He stops talking

And counts heartbeats

Making himself stay calm

In the moments

When he has nothing left to say

Somehow they get along

Mostly when sober

Except most nights she gets high

And then things go astray
