Dream
I never was a typical child
My days filled with longing for blue skies
Where I could see dragons and valiant knights
Dancing among the clouds
My mother would scoff
And turn my head back to domesticity
My father would frown
And point to my scholarly duty
My heart yearned for the freedom
Of the written word
To grasp the magic of the story
For it never laughed
Nor judged
I was never a typical child
While the rest recited a dutiful rote
I was running through the fields
Of my mind, laughing in joy
While the others snickered at my lost expressions
Until the day I met her
Who took my hand and ran with me
Daydreaming of wild adventures
Concocting stories by the firelight
A gleam in both our eyes
And she was happy
For I was never a typical child
