*** December 24th ***

On December 24th as Apollo 8 made its journey around the moon, accomplishing the monumental. There, on the moon’s horizon, a spectacular sight. Small, blue marble rising up over forbidding grey, cratered landscape. Three men could gauge the insignificance of our world, set in the backdrop of space, a rare gem shining in its setting, illuminated by an insignificant star in an ocean of millions of stars. Three men could assess the individual contributions and achievements of any of the small people on the surface of this iridescent sphere and see the utter meaningless of any of it in relation to the rest of the universe. Borman, Lovell, and Anders, instead, looked to the greater unity, the whole and saw a place of wonder. “…Merry Christmas - and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.”

Quote: Frank Borman, Apollo 8, Dec. 24th 1968, Christmas Message closing.
