Three Generations
Time to put the lights up again
… “Momma, when’s Christmas?”
Get the wreath on the door
… “Soon, my dear. When the snows fly.”
Find the tree
… “When will that be?”
Before the snow falls
… “Not so long now.”
Christmas will soon be here
… “Will we go see Grandpère?”
Grandchildren at my door
… “Of course, my dear.”
Small faces, mouths open in awe
… “Is it time, yet?”
Running around in sheer delight
… “Just about.”
Sit on my lap, keep me warm
… “I can’t wait, to sit with him in the rocking chair.”
Remind me of me when I was young
… “To hear his stories of when he was like me.”
Always a question at the ready
… “I like those stories too.”
And how they listen
… “What was it like when you were young?”
To hear your old stories
… “Now that’s a story for Grandpère to tell.”
And how they lean in
… “Is it time to go, now?”
And hug you so dearly
… “Yes, my dear. It’s time to go.”
And how they hold that place in your heart
… Finally! Off to Grandpère's for Noël.
