First Snow at Algoma, A. Y. Jackson, 1920

First Snow at Algoma

The stains of autumn’s red leaves fade among the barren trees

Winter brings the snows to blanket the earth

Tumultuous winds blow from across the seas

The stains of autumn’s red leaves fade among the barren trees

A time for solitude and remembrance, and sentiment appease

A season of cold wind and ice will refresh and bring a rebirth

The stains of autumn’s red leaves fade among the barren trees

Winter brings the snows to blanket the earth

A Clear Winter, Arthur Lismer, 1916

A Clear Winter

In the land of snow, where cold winds blow

Under the brightest of bright blue skies, the sun glints on the ice-covered land

The pure and chilling air, breaths making dense clouds at forty below

In the land of snow, where cold winds blow

Snowshoes track Arctic hare where the river breaks through the snow

Silvery hills of snow-topped pines compose this hinterland

In the land of snow, where cold winds blow

Under the brightest of bright blue skies, the sun glints on the ice-covered land

Lake and Mountains, Lawren Harris, 1928

Lake and Mountains

When you arrive at last upon the frozen shore

The haunting lands of ice and snow will bring you to your knees

Gaze upon the glaciered peaks, hearkening to wisdom and lore

When you arrive at last upon the frozen shore

Breathe deeply and sigh under arctic blue skies, yearn for more

You have come to a sacred place of light and shadow, land without trees

The haunting lands of ice and snow will bring you to your knees

When you arrive at last upon the frozen shore
