To a friend I loved and lost

Each morning I wake to water,

Your delicate clay memorial.

Fertilizing my underground feelings,

A resurrection by captive cacti.

Since your spirit vanished,

I grew a garden to grief.

Each spiny plant commemorates,

A precious moment together.

A succulent’s thick waxy layer,

Retains our first shared words.

Leaves forming spines transpire,

To remind me of our special place.

I miss our effortless conversations,

That always came back to cacti.

Sometimes I reminisce,

In how they made you smile.

Looking back, I should have seen

The wilted eyes, hidden from sun.

I was clueless to your drowning,

You were a cactus in the rain.
