Bringing in the washing

He washed it, & hung it all out, then

he went out, shopping I think, while

I stayed home writing, or at least

thinking about writing ... Later on,

I brought the washing in again - sun &

breeze dried, fresh, dry, perfect. Then

I put it all away again, undies, socks,

tops, bottoms, all of it tidied, & put

back where it came from, ready for

when it may be needed again …

Winter has come - breezes that dried

the clothes today, set to change soon,

& turn from northern heat to southern

chill, with rain, the way it goes when

seasons swap from one to the other …

& if you’re not careful, you may discover

your available coverings don’t cover

enough, of what you need covered -

Drying sun & breeze were there today,

but soon, may be gone & not due back

for half a year or more; who can tell

really, with climate change …But as long

as he washes it, & hangs it all out, I’ll

go on bringing it in, & putting it all away,

ready for whatever it is, that might or

might not come next ...
