the shriek of glass breaking,

each sliver striking like a knife,

an abrupt ending to a short lifetime,

seconds clipping by and melding,

a moment slipping into eternity,

her blonde hair dyed a rust color,

the way the police shake their heads,

a car that was once intact now split,

a paramedic closes his eyes and prays,

the metal is bent at wrong angles,

the scent of smoke permeates the scene,

no one knew the dying words she spoke,

there was a call no one wanted to make,

and afterwards a tow truck pulled the wreck away

as a mother fell to her knees once word got out,

breaking a heart as if it were just a pane of glass.
