Black Sun

covered in beauty

A murmuration

of a thousand heart beats,

a thousand swoops and dives.

Tens of thousands of feathers

folding, racing, spreading, chasing,

natural as air

yet rare to behold.

A thousand bodies, swift and strong,

bold and sure,

taking to the skies, hoping to mesmerize,

protect; be as one.

The beauty in unity,

awesome in its simplicity

to come together,

to share life.

A pulsing, twisting, wild dance

emblazoned in the sky.

A rare vision to feast upon,

blotting out the sun

in a roiling cloud of black.

A pinnacle reached,

a joy transcended

as the will of few becomes

the burden of all

in a timeless rhythm of

following, then leading,

spreading apart

only to come together

again and again

in aerial feats of wonder and awe.

Painting ribbons and funnels,

swells and rounded edge

as though formed by the

skilled hands of a master.

Tens of thousands of lungs

burn and hearts race to catch

the waning light of day,

escape the bitter sting of loss.

Desperately seeking safety

in numbers

as the push and pull of predator and prey

never ceases, the cycle of life–

unbroken.

Only to disperse like a funnel of wind,

broken apart bit by bit

until the last has settled

to roost for the night,

leaving their imprint behind

on those lucky enough to witness

the majesty of black sun.

Now that's a majestic poem about flocks of birds. Still, I feel like this could also be applied to certain swarms of bugs like butterflies or dragonflies. Heck, on certain lakes there are known what's to be called tornados, that are just large mating clouds of flying insects in the air. Another thing that this makes me think of is, what would it be like if it were a school of fish and a predator from bellow is watching a giant safety ball of fish swim about, blocking the light of the sun from penetrating further, deeper, into the waters.

Awesome! It felt like I just ran a mile after reading that. The words all fell into place and tumbled down the page as my eyes tried to keep up. Great effect. You get two hearts for this, no, three...💖💖💖 Plus the one I left up top.
