Be You

by Kay Williams about a year ago in slam poetry

Focus on What You Are Not What You Aren't

Be You

'But are you?' My conscious asked after I screamed at myself telling myself I am a fuck up.

Convincing myself I am a failure.

But am I?

'You are not.'

I am. 'No. I wouldn’t say you are.'

Then what am I

'A friend,

a daughter,

an aunt,

a lover,

a poet,

a caregiver,

an inspiration,

strong,

brave,

powerful,

amazement,

the sun when it sets and the moon when it rises.

You are… human.'

Am I?

'You are'

I am.
