Sta“B-29” by Michael James ゥ 2019

for Tom and Ann Lancia “Thank you for your service”

Over the lifeline crossing time,

We were soldiers once and young,

A dozen men are doing fine in our shimmering B-29

My girl is at home, she waits for me towing the line,

But my Soul, mind and heart are still on her,

I miss her so much while I kiss the sky in my B-29.

A soldier's story is oft filled with grit and grime,

We answered the call for country and kinsmen,

Proud Betty did build the ultra fine B-29

We didn't provoke that bloody war this time,

Poking a sleeping bear is unwise,

Wing to wing the last thing they saw was out shimmering B-29.

Skies were blackened with smoke and chime,

Of thousands of horsepower all at once,

As the Allies rallied over Europe's skies in the glorious B-29

Italy, Poland, France gave way to madness' crime,

But with pluck and grit and the will of God,

Men set sail for distant shores in our marvelous B-29s.

A crew of 12, bomber jackets brown and fine,

Delivered the blows, bloodied the Axis' nose,

With unstoppable waves and line after line of Super B29s.

Names that echo through the annals of time,

Normandy, Tokyo, Iwo Jima too,

All fell swiftly under the spell of Betty's B-29.

And suddenly as daylight came news just in time,

The War was over, D-Day is here at last,

I'm going home to be with my girl in a disarmed B-29.
