Apology

I'm forever saying I'm sorry

I'm sorry," I say, too often —

Embarrassed to exist.

A lesson given long ago:

It's not safe to resist;

Apologize to make things smooth,

To cool a hot head,

It doesn't matter who's at fault

As long as it gets said.

I am trying to unlearn this.

I know it isn't right,

But some things don't just fall away

One must put up a fight.

Now, making peace isn't easy,

Diff'rent from making nice.

Only with love, time, and patience

Can all of us suffice.
