Ravens and Writing Desks

Why is a raven like a writing desk?

Well, I’m fond of them both,

And unsure what they think of me.

A raven is elegant, well dressed,

Simple, somber, and mystic,

Ready for a funeral or a meal of the two together.

A desk’s appearance hardly matters.

It’s worth is potential.

In groups, ravens are

Treacherous conspirators,

The epitome of the meaningful.

And a writing desk

Is where I think thoughts on ravens

And ink the mess across scraps,

Striving to match their mood.

I pause my poeting

And watch my muse move.

The bird of omen’s stark profile

Now makes an easy, noble stance

On the peak of my garbage heap

Like a dark silhouette of drama

Atop the humdrum

And often smelly reality.
