A thing called Hope
A short poem inspired by Emily Dickinson
In the hearts of places not yet known to us
The people and the places they inhabit
Capture our attention, livening our imagination
With small scenes and delightful things
A cornucopia of unexpected surprises.
The desire to visit beckons us like backyard feeders to birds.
~
On the topic of birds,
Emily Dickinson once wrote:
“Hope is the thing with Feathers
That perches in the soul.”
Most days, folks would nod in agreement
To the gentle truth of that eternal line.
-
But when times are hard, a few might cry:
"What is the meaning of this thing called hope?"
"Where is my share of it?"
"What does Hope have in store for us today?"
-
Although efforts to understand the uneven
Distribution of this thing called Hope
May seem futile, there is reason to believe
In deeper-rooted purpose and understanding.
~
Hope is the thing with Fortitude
That gives strength to our spirit.
-
Hope is the thing with Brilliance
That shines throughout the world.
-
Hope is the thing with Parachutes
That eases our fall into the Abyss.
-
Yes, the Abyss that we know to be dark and somber:
A place deep within our fears.
Yes, the Abyss that Nietzsche alluded to
In "Beyond Good and Evil"
Penned by a man whose mind was
Nearer to incapacitation than he knew.
-
But our faith surpasses the bounds of
whimsical definition, because:
Hope is the thing with Mortar
That binds this world together.
