A Second Love

A poem for my late husband

Paul, helping with a rocket for school. Always helpful!

I didn't want you to go.

We had plans, goals, ambitions.

When your heart gave out, so did mine.

I was cracked, damaged, empty.

*

You unselfishly gave me

The best years of your life,

Helpfulness, faithfulness, compassion,

And of course, our beautiful girls.

*

Neither of us was perfect -

I don't know anyone who is.

But we always made

The best of the cards we were dealt.

*

I didn't want to be alone.

I was too young to give up on life,

Too in need of love to be lonely.

Too full of love not to give it.

*

I hope you are happy

That I chose to move on.

I hope you know

You are not forgotten.

*

And though I love another,

I think of you fondly.

And I will always

Love you as well.
