and a fate of a king

The river splashed against the large stone,

Worn and beaten from years of attrition

The king held his crown with premonition

Watching from cliffs above the rivers flow

He hoped the rocks would continue to hold

Alone in his keep, with nowhere to go

The emperor knew what was to come next

Once the stones broke, it would be a king’s neck

The raging river began to turn red

Below the king’s throne, inside a steeple

Calls from his men, “Retreat!” had to be said

When the last attempts soon became feeble

Endless men choosing to die in his stead

The large stone here of course was his people
