A Heart of Anger
By: H. M. Zike
A heart begins true and pure, Innocent.
It’s hard to imagine a child’s heart burning.
Life is painful, and humans are cruel.
Anger is like a weed; fast growing and intrusive
It starts small, building, festering.
Burning like smolders,
The more the fire is fed the bigger it grows.
The bigger the fire grows, the hungrier it becomes.
The hungrier it becomes, the louder it screams.
Screams that drown out the happiest of thoughts.
Before you realize it, there is nothing left.
How do you get rid of the anger?
When the roots have burrowed their way so deeply.
You can’t yank it out without further pain.
Young ladies aren’t allowed to scream or fight.
They are expected to smile and be sweet as sugar.
But pouring sugar over a fire only gets you melted sugar.
The anger is so much more powerful
Eventually the fire burns so hot, shines so bright,
And grows so big it starts to eat you from within.
You can try to ignore it but the explosion is imminent.
The explosion is brilliant, red hot, and terrifying.
Just when you think all is over your catharsis is completed.
You find that the fire is never completely extinguished.
The embers still smolder; hungry for more.
