When JJ, my $3,000 street rescue, took me hostage in 2005 she was possibly six months old and pregnant. After she had her litter of five, I began feeding her tiny cans of Fancy Feast because those hungry little fiends were sucking the calories out of her as fast as she could inhale them. If either my partner or I moved in the general direction of the kitchen, a gray blur would whip past us and if we actually went into the kitchen we would find Miss JJ on the counter on her hind legs with her front paws on the cupboard door.

A hawk in my heart
I was cruising toward Blackfriars Bridge, south to the beckoning Thames. I rise early for my permitted “one form of exercise a day” — cycling seems the best way to keep 2 metres apart and so I discover I am becoming a more confident cyclist. Disquieting, however, to feel proud of my improving skills, knowing they are thanks to the streets eerily emptied by COVID-19. Ordinarily the City would be thick with cars and trucks and buses, but not this morning, not any morning now.

When my brother rescued Libby as a puppy and brought her home, my dad tried to return her to her previous owners four times. After that, he gave up and my brother trained her up to be the perfect dog. That’s how she became our nanny dog. She followed my sister and I everywhere, matched our every step and never took her eyes off of us. We ventured everywhere outside as kids, and wherever we went, Libby dutifully followed. When my mom called her back home, she would look between my sister and I and my mom, completely torn. She knew she had to listen to mom, but how could she leave the kids out by themselves?
